Here's a Few top tips:

009 distributors should nearly always be set at 10 degrees before top dead centre. Also, check total advance, it should be 32 degrees.

Remember the Points gap should not be altered without resetting timing.

valve clearances:
- stock/ally pushrods 006 thou. or .015 mm
- steel/chromoly pushrods 004 thou. or .010 mm.

recommended Spark Plugs:
- bosch w8ac for stock beetle
- bosch w7ac for stock 15-1600 type 2
- bosch w8cc for stock 1.7, 1.8 & 2000cc type 4 motors.

grease front axles/king & link pins at least every 3000 miles and keep check for required link pin adjustment.
